American conservativism categories

Can you have a look at the CfD I've started here? I was extremely close to deleting these categories speedily as essentially a by-subcategory re-creation of Category:American conservatives, but I held off and did a formal nomination because it wasn't an explicit re-creation as such.

However, there's some evidence that User:Hmains, the creator of some of these categories, was substituting his new categories for Category:Conservatives on a number of article pages. (This was done before the discussion on Category:Conservatives was closed and it was deleted, so to me it looks like a bit of an end-run around that process as well.)

Long story short—let me know what you think about this, and feel free to speedily delete them if you think it's appropriate. I would certainly defend you if you made that decision as it essentially would confirm what I felt was probably the right thing in the first place. Thanks, Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:39, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for looking; my impulse was to delete but I'm glad I started a nomination instead and I know I need to AGF on this without reading too much into it. Good Ol’factory (talk) 08:45, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Jojo comics (reply on my talk page)

Ok, you deleted my page on Jojo comics. Why? It was a good page,it did give the reader "contex" and I did what the origonal tags said to do. The origonal tags (which were put on there by a new page patroler) didnt say speedy deletion. Plus, I didnt have time to put hagon or whatever because you didnt even give it time! Oh and by the way Im a new page patroler (I wasnt when I created this page) and it was a worthy page plus there is tons of other pages like this that werent deleted. Just go to my page and then to the discusion to reply Invader Chason 123456 (talk) 23:40, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Talk:Monte Carlo Resort and Casino assistance requested

Hello Vegaswikian, I have posted a question in Talk:Monte Carlo Resort and Casino about dead links in the Reference section and since you seen very knowledgeable about Wikipedia I'd appreciate any opinion that you could give to help. TYIA. Rosie, Queen of Corona (talk) 06:15, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Rename Category:##th century XXX to Category:##th-century XXX

I OPPOSE THESE RENAMES. THEY DO NOT MATCH OTHER CAT NAMES! --Carlaude (talk) 00:07, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
If their are some categories are using both forms then it is not a canidate for Speedy change. --Carlaude (talk) 01:41, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
It also would make categories harder to use, since the dash does not come naturly to people and that is not what most categories use, even it is technically correct. --Carlaude (talk) 01:46, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
If there was a CfD you should referenced it in the speedy request.--Carlaude (talk) 03:00, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
Why cannot you even let me read it and so I know it is as globally relevant as you say. It would also help if you were more systematic about the change requests. --Carlaude (talk) 21:05, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
I now see (in your note) that there was no original CfD-- you only ever discussed it in "speedy". Many people, such as myself, only watch the normal CfD page. Your change is nothing like the example for the typographical error. Grammar syntax is not the same as typographical. Please move them to the normal CfD page.--Carlaude (talk) 21:16, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Category cleanup

I'm doing a cleanup of the Category:Mobile_phones and all of its sub-categories. See the category page for what it should and should not contain. Any help would be appreciated, as the work is very tedious. The structure of Category:Mobile_telecommunications needs to be expanded. Please provide explicit definitions for a category if creating one. A lot of the pages I've revised so far have a parent category and a child category. Mojodaddy (talk) 05:42, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Norfolk

See how predabbing per the comma convention contributes to the problem? It's not like we can argue that Norfolk, Virginia is dabbed because there is no primary usage for Norfolk - for it would be dabbed regardless. Hence the Brits claim Norfolk for themselves. Perdabbing per the comma convention for U.S. cities needs to be opposed for many reasons; this is only one of them. --Born2cycle (talk) 00:23, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Hold please

Regarding Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2009_January_10#Category:Diseases_of_skin_appendages, I think perhaps you may want to reread the discussion. At no point did anyone suggest Category:Medical conditions of the skin as a possible option for the Category:Diseases of skin appendages, nor does that renaming make much sense to me. My preference was a renaming to Category:Conditions of the skin appendages, which I think was acceptable to most people involved in the discussion. Regardless, could please look at the discussion again? kilbad (talk) 19:02, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Scenic Airlines Accidents

Scenic Airlines has had five fatal accidents. They have also had accidents that resulted in injuries and hull losses. Norfolk edits

Hi

I noticed you managed to fix the formatting on the Norfolk page - how did you do it ?

I tried for about half an hour to get the "edit"'s to not appear in the middle of the text I was going to put some of the images into galleries between the text, so I don't want it to mess the formatting up again

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks--Chaosdruid (talk) 11:22, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

From compare it looks like you only removed some CR, which is what i was trying to do but couldn't get to work - seems like you have the magic touch then !! lol

Category:Extrajudicial prisoners of the United States

Hey, there's a discussion regarding the use of this category at Talk:Abd Al Aziz Sayer Uwain Al Shammeri. It's hard to get a discussion about a category unless it's at CFD, so I'm posting this on the talkpage of some "category editors" who I'm familiar with. --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 17:53, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Hiya. Rather than delete this article I've turned it to a redicrect. The article it redirects to has a ref asserting notability for Target Express and there is a good chance someone may search under this term so this seems the best solution. Hope you're okay with that. Pedro :  Chat  08:13, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Hyphen-ation-ation

Hah - So you thought you could sneak some non-adjectivals through by hiding them in plain sight in the middle of that blizzard of other Speedies! Nice try, VW - but you're gonna have to get up a little earlier to sneak something like that past us! What's that?? You say your head is spinning like a top from doing so many of the damn things? • Dear Vegaswikian, since there is clear consense for this project of yours I will not hinder you and may even help you-- but I will you would consider a reqest of mine.
  • I have a friend doing a searching catagories by name with a Bot for a project of ours but it only works if the catagory names do not change. What do you thin of not changing the anymore of the catagories on this list of say a week? I can look into getting you a more exsacet time-frame. Once we are done-- or at least done with the current sort-- you can even use the list to change them all at once. What do you think? --Carlaude (talk) 21:39, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
    • So you want me to take a week off:-} I can do that, if you will allow me a few exceptions. I'd like to clean up the categories that list early and late 11th-century and the Greek/Ancient Greeks once the current renames go through. And yes, I will gladly accept any help when your friend is done. Have fun. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:01, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Category:Tatra (company)

Why did you remove Category:Truck manufacturers from Category:Tatra (company)? They are a truck manufacturer so they deserve to be in that category. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 08:56, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Category help

Is there any specific method in which you are going about renaming all the needed hyphenated century categories? Occasionally I'll come across one that needs to be changed, but if you are completing these in some sort of set order I don't want to do a bunch if it will mess up your pattern somehow. I'm thinking specifically of the millennium ones. They should be "1st-millennium BC births" etc. I can nominate them but let me know if I shouldn't right away for some reason. How long do those cache resets for template application usually take? I changed some of them over a week ago, and they haven't budged. I don't want to take the time to null edit each subcategory, but this kind of delay is a bit strange, isn't it? I don't have much experience in waiting for them, though. ACS presidents

Is there any reason why you added "(businessman)" next to the name of the 2009 ACS president (Tom Lane)? Just curiosity - I personally don't know anything about him. Mgnelu (talk) 19:53, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

ok, so you tried to disambiguate, not to imply that he is a businessman. In the meantime, I found the 2009 ACS president Tom Lane (thomaslane.org). I will change the name from Tom to Thomas - this way, there is no need for disambiguation (at least for now). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mgnelu (talkcontribs) 01:26, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

I came across an article today from the Press of Atlantic City originally published February 24th found (here) which states outright that Tropicana Entertainment is "a former affiliate of Columbia Sussex Corp." now does that mean references to Columbia Sussex as the current owner of Tropicana Entertainment and consequently the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City be removed and replaced in the article as former owners? Carnival recat

I just noticed your rename of cat:Carnival to cat:Carnivals, and I was trying to figure out what the motivation for the rename was. After all, we have cat:Christmas, not cat:Christmases, cat:Easter, not cat:Easters, cat:Chinese New Year, not cat:Chinese New Years. So why pluralise this one holiday? Guettarda (talk) 07:18, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

You do realise that the simple fact that things are homophones isn't reason to unite them in a single category, don't you? Carnival is a pre-Lenten festival, usually in areas that have a Catholic heritage. Travelling carnivals, on the other hand, are fairs. Same word, different meaning. I realise that cat:Travelling carnivals shouldn't have been a subcat of cat:Carnival. But why not fix the problem, rather than compound it? Guettarda (talk) 04:01, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Please, feel free not to get defensive or respond that you will ignore the actions of others. I removed a reference because it had nothing to do with what it was citing, and I added two Fact tags for information that you currently have no citation for. Why? Format for casino ownership/name changes

Hi Vegas: I have a question about the naming convention for casinos. In most articles where there is a physical location we relate the history of the physical location and use the current name (e.g., buildings, airports, ships, theatres, ballparks, etc.) However in the casino articles, the same structure has multiple articles for each new casino owner. My knee jerk reaction is that we should stick to the current name and place the histories in there. But I was curious what you thought. Thanks. (this comment was spurred after somebody is moving the defunct Atlantic City casinos into the new names -- unfortunately they are not also moving the histories. ) Americasroof (talk) 19:57, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Category:Current spaceflights

Hi. I think there may be a misunderstanding with regard to your CFD nomination of Category:Current spaceflights. The category in question is a project-related category, rather than a content-related category, but for some reason was not tagged as such. I have now marked it as such, and was wondering if you could review the CFD nomination with regard to this development. Thanks --GW 22:10, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Not sure how this is now tagged as being a project related category. In any case, it is still rolling up into main space categories and is listed in those. If anything, this might be better as a deleted category. Given that the category is now hidden, what categories should an article like THEMIS be in? Getting back to the nomination. I would be more inclined to say delete right now and rely on the template. If this is really project related, it should be renamed and not be rolling up into any main name space categories if the decision is to keep. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:40, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Yea, still interested. Thanks. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:33, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
Ok.
And you have my sincere apologies for it taking so long (the wikibreak and such). I've found a draft of my nomination statement. If I haven't updated you about it in the next few days, don't only drop me a note, have kbdank (et al) help you with the cattle prod : ) - jc37 09:55, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
At this point, I've asked Black Falcon for a bit of help, and also asked him and Kbdank to co-nom.
Note that Kbdank declined (see his talk page), and is leaving it up to you if you think it would be a positive thing.
Is there anyone else that you think might wish to co-nom? (In RfA, most do not like to see more than 3-4 co-noms, but my experience with RfB is that a few more than that is acceptable, and possibly even preferable.)
At this point, I think you may wish to check out some past RfBs (if you haven't already) to see what you may be in for. And since it's been awhile since we first discussed this, perhaps double check that you're up on everything involved with being a Bureaucrat (user-rights, potential responsibilities, etc.)
Also, there have been some recent proposals involving bureaucrats, you may wish to check them out in case you're asked questions about your opinion of them.
Well, I suppose that's enough "homework" for now : ) - jc37 20:47, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm going to beg off for a while. I did do more research and it looks like if you don't participate in RfA discussions you have issues. So I guess I'll need to spend some time there before this can move forward. And right now I simply don't have the time to spare. Sorry. Vegaswikian (talk) 01:49, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes. While I'm disappointed, I fully understand, and agree. You might also become a bit fluent in Wikipedia:Changing username.
Incidentally, check out Black Falcon's talk page. I endorse everything he said there about you.
My (re-written - since he covered quite a few points I was saying originally) nomination was about how you amazingly tend to sidestep drama, and how you just exceedingly come across as an "adult". (A hard word to define, since I don't mean anything which has to do with one's age.)
Anyway, if you're ever up for any additional tools, please let me know. - jc37 02:04, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the positive comments. Yes, I do happen to be an adult, but I'm still learning how to really be one. In my real life I get to deal with people who may not be happy with the actions I have to take, and that makes you aware of the need to frequently walk on egg shells. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:16, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
If that's something you enjoy, you might check out OTRS. My understanding is that they're always looking for more help. - jc37 02:44, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Category satellites removed from geostationary orbit

Why did you remove the category Satellites from geostationary orbit? Please answer here or in Talk:Geostationary_orbit, I am watching both --Pot (talk) 12:46, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

As the edit comment stated, I removed it as an included category. Category:Satellites is a parent of Category:Geostationary orbit. So by being included in Category:Geostationary orbit, it rolls up into an appropriate place in Category:Satellites. Since you apparently are involved in orbit articles, maybe you can answer something for me. In looking at other articles on orbits, there appears to be significant overlap between Category:Orbits and Category:Earth orbits. I guess my question is, is there any reason why the orbits listed in Category:Earth orbits, can not be used on any other body in space? If they can, then one wonders if that is a proper way to use categories. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:21, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your clarification, I am relatively new to Wikipedia so I had not understood you edit comment.
As for your question, I am not an orbit expert, however I see that Category:Earth orbits in fact lists topics that are relevant to Earth, while Category:Orbits is more general, listing generic topics and topics that apply to N-body systems with N greater than 1. While I do not know which is the best way to handle this in Wikipedia, I find the current distinction more instructive than having a single category. --Pot (talk) 12:28, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Vegas categories

I was planning to nominate them as "Las Vegas, Nevada" to specifically include the Strip in the category descriptions (that is, "Las Vegas" would mean Las Vegas and adjoining unincorporated areas in Clark County). But if you would prefer to preempt that by nominating them yourself as the "Las Vegas metropolitan area," go ahead. Either way, we can politely propose different solutions, and our fellow editors can choose which they like best. Though I prefer one approach over the other, I can be happy with any resolution that knocks these categories of the list of those needing conversion.--Mike Selinker (talk) 01:06, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I know you are an admin but we all make mistakes: I declined three of your taggings so far today, all of them were A7 taggings for buildings. Please remember that buildings are not covered by A7 and as such cannot be speedy deleted. You need to use WP:PROD or WP:AFD instead. Regards SoWhy 11:13, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Investment trusts in the United States

I have proposed Category: Investment trusts of the United States for deletion - you can see my rationale on the CFD page. Hence my edit on Category: Real estate investment trusts of the United States. My point is that although REITs are a US concept, investment trusts are not, so "Investment trusts of the United States" is not a meaningful category. I think you may have created the category on the analogy of Category: Investment trusts of the United Kingdom, but the problem is that whereas UK REITs are constituted as investment trusts under UK law, US REITs are not. Bjelovar–Bilogora County

Prior to your speedy rename nomination, I had speedily moved this and 14 other Croatian county categories from their hyphenated versions to abide with MOS:DASH and English grammar. However, since my moves were contested, I have reverted them and started a CFD at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2009_April_13#Croatian_counties. —Admiral Norton (talk) 13:37, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Motel

Hey Vegaswikian

I undid your CN on Hotel (section Motel) as I think it is covered adequately in Motel and this is patently simply a summary. I think Motel istelf is under-referenced, but the CN then properly lies there, and not in Hotel. Just my opinion and quite happy to discuss, I was just trying to make it slightly more informative than it was before, WITHOUT having to go and cite references, which are (or should be) in the main article.

Best wishes SimonTrew (talk) 19:24, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Vegas, thanks for the reply. I don't know if you prefer them all in one place (and maybe move to article talk) or keep in two places or whatever, I'm easy.
I've added a link in the main Motel article to source and origin (book by Bill Bryson). I am not sure I agree with you with replicating references all over the place, some people say that the main article is its own reference, if you see what I mean, and there is no point duplicating references. Since my inital temptation was to add a reference to another article, which of course is frowned on, the main article IS a reference. That is not to deny that maybe the article also needs other references, and indeed the Motel one too, but I can't see the point of duplicating them. If you could explain why you think it is useful to do so, I would find that helpful-- as a relatively new editor I just try to think what would a reader make of this? and work on that strategy: a reader would hit "Main article", I think.
This more properly belongs in the article's talk, but I know from experience if you put something there it never gets a response, so best to start with user talk and we can move it if you want.
Best wishes SimonTrew (talk) 19:39, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

County templates in categories

Please don't continue removing county templates from categories: this is standard for county templates nationwide, as they're directly related to the county. It's not as if categories are just for articles, after all. Nyttend (talk) 03:18, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Where's your source for the idea that categories are only for articles? Categories are for pages related to the subject of the category, not just articles. Yes there are categories for nav templates (although I didn't make the Nevada ones, I made the majority of county templates nationwide), but unless there's a category for "nav templates for Elko County, Nevada", the Elko County template should also be in the category for "Elko County, Nevada". Categories are for utility, remember, and it's quite useful to have the county template in the county category. Nyttend (talk) 11:19, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

flamingo article plagarism

Just wanted you to see, if you hadn't already, that the bulk of the Flamingo Las Vegas history was taken verbatim from some book. I tagged the section and provided a link to example text. Didn't want you to be surprised if the entire chunk went missing in a day or two. Yes, I know you weren't the one to add it. Pretty sure, at least. Kinda confident. Not really positive. Could be wrong. Having second thoughts about that. Accusing you, actually. (kidding. I kid. Bad joke. Honest. Just bringing it to your attention is all in what is intended to be a funny way but failing miserably). SpikeJones (talk) 14:13, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

It's not that big a deal to dig back about a year in history and pull *some* text that could work before all those edits were entered in the first place. I just didn't do that at the time. (on a side note, did the Flamingo open a brewpub recently?) SpikeJones (talk) 20:54, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Do you think changing, say, Category:Honduran cardinals to Category:Honduran Roman Catholic cardinals qualifies under speedy criterion #6? Helldorado

I'm a historian of the early Tombstone days, not a Tombstone booster (I live in California). However, Tombstone IS Helldorado. A miner there coined the term, Breakenridge's book gave it popularity (and led to the 1935 movie), and Tombstone has been doing the festival since 1929. The idea that Las Vegas can coopt a piece of authentic Western history just by deciding it wants to do the theme again (after a long hiatus), is about as silly as The New York, New York casino wanting it to be the primary direct for "NY, NY." Please. You can fight this out if you want, but you'll go nowhere. SBHarris 23:28, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Would you support my application for Administrator?

When I was most active 3-5 years ago, I turned down folks that suggested I become an administrator. It wasn't a big deal. Now, I'm finding that many tasks and templates that I'm accustomed to doing (including many that I created and/or extensively re-worked) now require being an administrator. I suppose it's mostly an increase in *pedia size, but still disconcerting.

Mostly, I've assisted at CfD and TfD these days, but they're still far behind. Do you think that I should apply for administrator?
--William Allen Simpson (talk) 05:04, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

While we may not always agree, I would lean to saying yes. I don't follow the nomination process, but I suspect that you may want to wait a while. From your talk page, you appear to have been away for a while. If that is the case, it may cause some to opine that you are not qualified based on the lack of activity. But hey, what do I know. Adding useful information is one thing, but you need to follow the policies and guidelines for using DAB pages. After reading that discussion, it is not clear that what you are trying to add really follows the guidelines. Several editors have pointed this out. There is a difference between useful information and following the MoS. Not all useful information is encyclopedic or belongs on the pages you are using. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:41, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Changes at WP:CFD

Hello Vegaswikian, Thank you for your comment at WP:CFD, just going to quickly tell you what happened when I moved the category Chicago transit authority stubs to Chicago Transit Authority stubs. Basically the category was included in a template, this one: Template:Chicago-metro-stub so I just changed the category that the template sorts them into, but this always takes a while to take affect, but all fine now, just letting you know because you seemed to think maybe it should be taken into a discussion at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion, but I trust it all makes sense now? If not, just ask. Thanks, All the best SpitfireTally-ho! 05:29, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

No, your actions were a violation of process. Changes to stub categories have to be discussed at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. The fact that this was only a template change is not at issue. The stub sorting project controls these names. You acted without a required discussion. BTW, this holds whether you change is acceptable or not. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:37, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Drat, you're right: Wikipedia:CFD#Special notes, uhm, I'll move it back, and then take it to Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion, by the way, do you know the formatting for nominating a category for renaming there? Thanks SpitfireTally-ho! 05:43, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
No, I do not know the format. At this point I think you should simply state over there what you did and let someone decide to move it back. Don't do extra work in case the change is approved. And since I don't participate, I have no idea what they will say. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:45, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Your personal comment in the discussion

In your last comment on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (categories) you made a remark of personal nature. You said "your track record as shown above is to disparage comments by others". I do not understand what you mean. I myself am the victim of an agressive and unpleasant editor (I am referring, of course, to William Allen Simpson), who has been making personal accusations and disparaging comments to me ever since I dared disagree with him, while often completely refraining from adressing the subject at hand. I, on the contrary, always adress the point with arguments and logic, and in a civil way. I am therefore surprised at your words, and - frankly - a little offended by the injustice (not by you personally). If I misunderstood you, please explain. Debresser (talk) 22:35, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

My comment was based on my perception of your comment about my reasoning. I understand that you and William Allen Simpson have been having some rather heated discussions. In fact you and I have had a few also. Personally I think you are too willing to keep raising these issues. They serve no purpose to further the discussions and tend to simply frustrate others. The effect of this on discussions is that often this causes the closer to skim or skip large sections of bantering that don't affect the discussion itself. This makes closings harder and also makes it easier to miss salient points. Your points would be better served, as would William Allen Simpson's, if you keep these discussions and finger pointing on the talk pages. While I know that you have been on the opposition for discussions I have closed, I have also acknowledged in some where your points where actually the best in the support of that position. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:45, 28 June 2009 (UTC) (Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Debresser")
I couldn't agree more. It has been WAS who has initiated personal attacks and off-the-point remarks, not me. As you can see yourself on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (categories), I have mentioned that 2-3 times in my last edits today.

Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2009 June 16#Category:Articles to be split

Thank you for finally closing. As to "Good Ol’factory's points about the headache", my interpretation is that it was really a WP:POINT nomination back on June 4th by Debresser (assisted by Farmbrough) to initiate his idea for mass renaming maintenance "dated subcategories", which is how he came to the attention of WT:CfD in the first place. He nominated it to fail, so that he could remove the Wikipedia requirement in the policy page, as he tried to do after Farmbrough early closed it. They're working in concert.

I'm trying to obtain some consistency with the categorization of number-one albums and number-one singles. I've now added Category:Billboard Hot Country Songs number-one singles of the year for Afd, as it seems we know have a further defining number-one song category (as if every country's and every Billboard weekly chart wasn't enough). I don't understand the inconsistency among wikipedians on this. Either they should all be allowed or none should. Thanks. --Wolfer68 (talk) 23:56, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Would you object to me attempting to create a number-one albums category again? The individual who raised the last one to CFD commented that it would be a good idea, that he just listed it as being previously deleted (see here). The lists that you said should be created for these already exist. Or would it better to go through a deletion review process? Thanks for your help and input. --Wolfer68 (talk) 18:53, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Category:Billboard 200 number-one albums. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. I thought I'd give it a shot at DRV. Wolfer68 (talk) 20:16, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

List of Casinos in Nevada

Hello Vegaswikian... I saw your post in the my talk section. Here is my reply to you: I've just researched this further... and found the following addresses for those casinos that I had changed:
Casino Royale
3411 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109
Ellis Island
4178 Koval Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89109
Hacienda
US Highway 93, Boulder City, NV 89005
Rio
3700 W Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89103
Slots-A-Fun
2890 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109
Tuscany
255 E Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89169
So, the only one technically in error was the Hacienda. I don't see why these others can be updated appropriately as Las Vegas (and the Hacienda as Boulder City respectively) since their address is in the City of Las Vegas? Having an empty cell in that page is not meaningful nor helpful to the person wanting to know the city of these establishments. I've left a post on my talk page about this as well.Zul32 (talk) 20:39, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

problem with the material you 'archived' from talk-Moon

You recently 'archived' some of the material in talk:moon 'manually'.

Where did it go? It seems there is an archiving problem over there, because the main talk page 'advertises' archives only up to about #36, which is accessible directly, but there are more archives accessible on a sequential basis from #36, going up to #51, which is not accessible from the talk page, and none of these seem to contain the material that you 'archived'.

So please could you bring back the material to somewhere accessible? Or, if you don't know how to do the archiving so it is accessible, could you alert someone who does? (Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that sort of thing myself.)

Just to draw it to your attention that I have closed the above cfd debate as upmerge, per your nomination. In the debate you suggested that you would consider nominating the other Melodifestivalen-by-year categories. I'm coming back to cfd after a bit of an absence, so I don't feel bold enough to take this debate as consensus to delete the lot of them, but I would encourage you to nominate them all for similar treatment.

Echelon Place

I don't quite get your revert reason - do you mean other articles link to the sections or what? in any case...seriously, there's no need to have a header when there's only one graph of content. See WP:HEAD: allow readers to navigate through the text more easily. There is no need to headify one sentence of text, or empty headings. (please reply here.) hbdragon88 (talk) 06:33, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

There are redirects from for the various major components that are to the headings. So as anchors they should be left. I guess this may come down to the question of will this be built as planned or not. If not, then maybe this should be redone and the redirects adjusted. If it is going to be built as is, then these should probably be left alone since the sections will be expanded as more details are made available. If built, most of these will become separate articles. Vegaswikian (talk) 06:38, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
IMO, it would just be a simple matter of changing the redirs to point to the main article. I could do it. Is that your only reason why you want to retain the headers? hbdragon88 (talk) 16:43, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
At this point yes. If and when the project resumes then the heading will be restored.Vegaswikian (talk) 18:52, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

I refer to your decisions on my nominations of some categories for deletion. I note that some categories have indeed been deleted before or reinstated.

Regarding the Jewish categorisation, I would refer you to the suggestions at WP:OC#CATGRS and sak that you apply them to the categories. Could there be an article appropriately written on WP about Jewish chess players? If not, why does a category for them exist?

I would appreciate your thoughts on this point.

Category:Real estate and property developers

I have noticed you have been removing this category from some articles and replacing it with Category:Real estate companies of the United States. I have several issues with this since builders are not always real estate companies so this change is likely not correct. I thing you should take the splitting of that category to WP:CFD to get more opinions. Vegaswikian (talk) 17:28, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your message - hope this finds you well! TonyTheTiger rv'd my edit to Donald Trump, here is the comment I made on his talkpage:
Hi, hope this finds you well! I noticed you reverted my edit to Donald Trump. I was in the process of sorting out the categories under real estate, and found that the terms/cats Category:Businesspeople in real estate, Category:Real estate companies and Category:Real estate and property developers had become unclear, and all terms/cats were being used for some/all articles which could be associated in that area. I hence reorganised the people into Category:Businesspeople in real estate, the companies into Category:Real estate companies or country sub-sections where they existed, and made both of these sub-categories of Category:Real estate and property developers. Hence, Mr Trump is correctly categorised, as cat in Category:Businesspeople in real estate it sub cats into Category:Real estate and property developers. I hope this clarifies my edit, and I hence reverted your edit to Trump, to reflect the new category/sub-category structure. If you have any questions, please - just ask. Best Regards, - Trident13
Before I take it to WP:CFD, could you give me your thoughts, and the way in which to pose the debate? Things which I think should be considered would include: (1) that most editors don't realise the sublties of the difference between Real Estate and Property Development, particularly those outside the USA; (2) there are a number of "vanity-esque" articles presently in the area of real estate/property development (3) as a result of sorting on a company v individual basis, there are enough articles now in each category now to sort on a country level those in the area of real estate/property development. Once again, thank you for your help - Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 21:30, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Not sure about that since I have not really dug into that tree recently. My interest was based on the changes to some articles I watch. Now for the comments. Category:Real estate could use some diffusion, I guess the question is how. In looking at what is there, I'm not sure that Category:Construction and Category:Moving and relocation belong. Then you have Category:Residential real estate and Category:Luxury real estate but not Category:Commercial real estate. So maybe a new subcategory for types of real estate. For me Category:Private islands is a sub category of Category:Luxury real estate. As far as developers go, I think we do need that classification since many of these companies and individuals are notable for doing that. Maybe the question is should that be in the real estate tree or in the construction tree. Would switching that add any clarity? Clearly you are raising significant questions. I just don't have good answers. Maybe after some discussion here, we can at least be able to sketch out some changes. Remember that if we retain the categories and only reparent them, we can generally do the changes without needing to go to CfD. So maybe we should consider reviewing the tree structure. Also we should be able to add new subcategories when they make sense. After these changes we could then evaluate if anything needs to go to CfD. Vegaswikian (talk) 21:55, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Good points! I think tree structure is key, in that: is it clear at present; and secondly is it maintainable? The old structure was not, and hence ended up with multiple similar people/businesses ending up with large differences in categorisation - could we define a better one? I think there are clear differences between developers (ie - real estate/property development) and construction companies, much as though some do both. We also have to take into account Category:Property management, again which I think is a clear distinction. In the area in which I tidied, why not start with a tree debate around construction/real estate/property development? Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 22:12, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Sounds reasonable. Let's wait a day or so to see if anyone else is going to comment. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:15, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Speedy of SG Blocks

Hello, Vegaswikian. I'm here to ask you why, being the starter of this page, I was not informed about this? I tried my best not to make it spam or anything, and it feels like a punch in the hut when something you spent a considerable amount of time researching gets speedied. But, when I look at your decision from your point of view, I can justify why you speedied it. It's skimpy. I'll holdon the article for now. Information was not plentiful and I do not think a rewrite would save it, so for now, I think we should merge this article with Shipping Container Architecture and put it in a section. Please tell me what you think. Thanks, Airplaneman (talk) 17:40, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Simply put, it reads like a press release, it fails WP:V, WP:RS, WP:N and WP:CORP. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:22, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Soo... I should merge and rewrite, right?Airplaneman (talk) 14:49, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Maybe a simple mention. There are many companies involved in this type of construction. All of them from what I have read are small and not notable. If the facts meet WP:V and WP:RS they should be OK in another article. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:52, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
So I can just put a subsection under this section that is dedicated to this company and move the relevant information from the article onto the space or can I just try to rewrite the article and keep it on its page? The sources are reliable and they can be verified, but one might argue that the company is not notable and that why is this company getting a page when so many others are not; that sort of stuff. What do you think? Merge or keep? I'm leaning towards keep, but that's just my opinion. Thanks. Sincerely, Airplaneman (talk) 00:12, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Most likely if the section is not viewed as spam. The fact the information may be difficult to find can be an indication that the company is not notable. You may also want to look at WP:CORP. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:11, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Articles for deletion Freedom Team of India

Is there a way for this particular deletion to be removed and the page allowed to be started again? http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=Freeedom+Team+of+India&go=Go

Someone in enthusiasm put in material directly from the FTI blog which was obviously non-compliant with Wiki policy. So the deletion was fine. However, the Freedom Team of India has been covered in the Press (http://freedomteam.in/blog/outreach-indore-09) fairly extensively and it is time for it to have its own wiki presence. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.175.234.55 (talk) 03:31, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Rhythm, Rhyme, Results

Hi, I am a co-founder of the company. Thanks for your oversight on everything. I am unsure of how to proceed; it is unclear how reasonably we can rely on outsiders to know much about us or the educational music industry in general, despite our successes. We have citations ready to add, including the New York Times online (already present), two NPR features, two Bay State Banner stories, Boston Phoenix, and Asian Economic news. We have also received awards from Common Sense Media, a leading advisory company that reviews commercial media.

The article is in need of structural changes, too. Similar to our fellow Wikipedia-listed company in the educational hip-hop sub-industry, we should probably have a "History" and "Recognition" section. I would also like to change the topic listing into a list of albums that each have their own pages; we are technically structured as both an artist and record label (Rhythm, Rhyme, Results, LLC) and have released four albums, each of which contains between 36 and 40 tracks. I am happy to add the official album information on those, including liner notes, which most only get by purchasing the album.

In short, based on the sparse information provided by outsiders, I would like to work constructively with you (and others) to whip the article into shape, as its presence seems warranted but the article is unlikely to garner necessary details from random contributors. What shall I do next? Shiwsup (talk) 19:27, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your lightning-prompt reply. I'll add some notes to the Talk page with the Request Edit tag. Regarding deletion, you can no doubt imagine that adding the notes and waiting for input may take longer than 36 hours. (We, too, are rather busy running our company.) Categorization of Russian companies

Hi, Vegaswikian. I copied from my talk page a question asked by Offliner. I think that your views on these issues would be a great help. Beagel (talk) 16:42, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I have a little problem with the categorization of Russian companies. I see you created the category Category:Engineering companies of Russia, so maybe you can help.
  1. Is "mechanical engineering" the correct term for the industry sector "machine building"? i.e. is "machine building sector" = "mechanical engineering sector"?
  2. What kind of companies should be put in Category:Engineering companies of Russia? (I don't understand what this category means)
  3. What does "manufacturing company" actually mean? (if you know?) Is a machine building/mechanical engineering company also a manufacturing company?
  4. Should I create a new category Category:Mechanical engineering companies of Russia (where I would put machine building companies in)?
If you don't know the answers, can you direct me to some info which would help? Thanks. Offliner (talk) 19:22, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I create a large number of categories, frequently to reduce the size of larger categories or to expand existing series. Hence the Russian one.
  1. For me, machine building is what it say, the building of machines. If you want to expand that back to the beginning of the process, then it would include the actual designing. At that point mechanical engineering and electrical engineering would be two of many disciplines that would be involved. Others could include designers to advise on the appearance of the machines.
  2. Any kind of company that provides engineering services. This could include any of the disciplines. So you run from airplane design, to power plant design to bridges to bio medical devices. So it is broad and covers a very wide area.
  3. A manufacturing company is one that makes anything from a car to a screw. Slabs of granite for your kitchen counter to the pepper grinder that you put on top of the counter. Packing plans, those that put oranges in cases for shipping, including the prep, are not manufacturing plants.
  4. Engineering companies are not manufacturing companies. Though a company can employ both types of skill and do both things.
Now, I'm not a Russian expert, but I think that they have had a tendency to label and do things differently then many other nations. So what they call something may not jive with the definition used in the rest of the world. In that case, you have a problem. Subcategories need to roll up correctly and simply saying something is X may be OK for local usage but that does not mean it rolls up in to Category:X if that is used to collect different items.
I see you may well need to decide where to change the name of the category and what is included in it. This will not be trivial and will likely generate some discussion. Without doing any digging to see what you have been working on, I'd suggest that you bring a trial rename for something in this area to a full CfD. Explain the problem and offer a suggested rename. Then see what the others say. Vegaswikian (talk) 17:17, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Strip hotels list

Good job on overhauling the List of Las Vegas Strip hotels. I had been thinking of making similar changes, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. One question: do you think it would be beneficial to break out the addresses into a separate column, so as to enable sorting by address? --LJ (talk) 04:18, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Addresses seem to be an issue over turning an article into a travel guide. So I don't think I would push that change. One way to deal with your requested sort would be to have the hotels listed by address at the start, north to south or visa versa. With an introduction and references, I think that the article would be considered for promotion to FA status. So maybe the direction should be to add more notes and reference those then nominate for FA status and not add more columns. Based on feedback from that review, we can add columns if that would help. I was considering adding the coordinates as a column since several featured lists seem to include that. But when I looked at the space that would take I decided against. Vegaswikian (talk) 04:44, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
It was just a thought, nothing major. Although I do like the idea of ordering the list by address at the start. Is there a similar list for off-Strip hotel/casinos in the Las Vegas area? That might be useful. --LJ (talk) 04:58, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

The notability guidelines on geographical entities seem to be pretty loose here - I found that out when I nominated a 1/3 acre uninhabited island in the middle of nowhere for deletion at AfD, and it was shot down pretty fast. (See the article and AfD.) For the relevant notability guideline essay, see here. Jafeluv (talk) 01:59, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey Vegaswikian, would you mind explaining your removal of Category:Bubblegum Crisis from {{Bubblegum Crisis}}? Your edit summary only says "categories", which isn't terribly helpful. Also note that it's standard practice for anime and manga-related navboxes to be categorized with their parent articles (e.g. {{Bleach}} is in Category:Bleach (manga) with Bleach (manga), {{Naruto}} is in Category:Naruto with Naruto, etc). ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 17:32, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Integral field spectrograph

Hi, I am just creating a stub article for Integral field spectrograph, an important category of astronomical instrument. I see there was an article of this title which was deleted in 2006, per your request or action. I do not know much about the subject, but hope to be learning more in the near future, so I look forward to adding more substance soon. I find ~30000 hits on Google to the term, so I think it is notable, and deserves coverage. For now I have added a single tutorial web reference, from the Durham group in the UK, which I hope will be considered sufficient verifiability to stave of immediate deletion until I am able to fill it out. Thanks Wwheaton (talk) 19:19, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Since there is a red link to it from another article, I think I will keep it, as I have already created it in any case. Wwheaton (talk) 19:31, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Question about listing of closed Nevada casinos

Many of my fellow collectors of chips and other memorabilia from Nevada casinos would like to help uncover and preserve the history of these casinos and small clubs. However, in doing some basic research here, I've noticed several pages on small closed casinos have been deleted or nominated for deletion.

Being a collector of casino chips myself, I sometimes lose perspective about the importance of these old casinos and clubs and understand that their history may not hold enough general interest to merit inclusion in Wikipedia. Therefore, I wonder if Wikipedia is the place we should contribute our efforts on this subject. I'm a newcomer to contributing here, but I know enough about researching old casinos to know that reliable, citeable reference material is scarce, especially when trying to delve into the history of a club. Oftentimes, what is available boils down to opening and closing dates and the names of the owners, perhaps with a postcard or photo of the place.

Based on your experience with this subject and Nevada history in general, would you agree that perhaps Wikipedia would not be a worthwhile place to put much effort into creating pages that may have less information than some of these deleted pages do? Vegaswikian - I am not sure you should have deleted the page Important_Economics_Articles rather than changed the name, unless there is another page that I can't find. In economics there are a series of current problems facing the profession that have historical roots - essentially the 'unsettled questions' in the field. This page contained references to those pages. It may have been a work in progress, but whoever did the work did a fairly good job of selecting the included pages. I would much rather fix that content than lose it. Is it possible that the page was vandalized and lost it's content prior to your deletion? Or was there another better page that replaced it? Im happy to own that task, but recreating that starting point would be difficult. Thanks. user:curtd59 August 27,2009. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Curtd59 (talkcontribs) 10:48, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Belt buckles are generally considered to be articles of jewelry, as a functional object of body adornment that is often used decoratively. This is partially evidenced by the images on the page which are highly decorative buckles created by goldsmiths. I have replaced the template and category. Las vegas museums

Hey - I unfortunately dont have time for a long response, but I have some questions about your changes for Category:Museums in the Greater Los Vegas area Category:Museums in the Greater Los Angeles Area is an example of other places with this. Personally, Vegas doesnt make anything easy with a real lack of distinction between the town and the "area". Anyway, I'll be back online later. Thanks dm (talk) 02:23, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

is a good example You took it from the county into the "greater" category when leaving it in the county category and putting the county into the greater category is a better way of showing the overlap. imho btw: I've been going through all the states cleaning these up in a consistent way so while I dont really care whether it's named one thing or the other, I'd like to keep the "way" it's organized the same as much as possible. dm (talk) 02:35, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Except that everything else is the LV metro area. Locally there is no Greater Las Vegas area. LA, along with other metro areas, have different name for the areas. Trying to force one to work in all areas is not correct. Las Vegas, Nevada is a city in within the Las Vegas metropolitan area which is a subset of Clark County, Nevada. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:37, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Like I said, I dont care about the name, and your points about Clark County not being coterminus with "Las Vegas Metropolitan Area" make sense. Alls well that ended well dm (talk) 03:42, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Your note

Sorry, I didn't really understand your post. I don't see what harm it does to collect articles and images in one place. That's what cats are for. When you reach a point of cats being too well-defined, things become harder to locate, defeating the purpose. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 20:35, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

I didn't understand a word of your post, sorry, but the point is this: categories exist in large measure so that readers can look to see whether there's anything in them that's relevant to their interests. These images are relevant to those categories, and it does no harm to have them there. If you want to add them to image categories too, go right ahead. But there's no need to remove them from the cats they're currently in. That's the beauty of cats: inclusion needn't boil down to either/or. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 20:55, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

FYI, I am not outright deleting it, as my update comment in the CfD should make clear; you've certainly misrepresented what I said there. I have used the bot to remove the articles, as per the CfD. The category then gets restored and the subcategories re-added. I did this all yesterday, but then it mistakenly got left in the queue, and it got deleted again! See here. An inquiry on my talk page would have been appropriate if you thought my behaviour was suspect. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:14, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

No, of course we are not. Are you accusing him or me of sockpuppetry? Since the issue has nothing to do with Vegaswikian, I was suggesting that my talk page would have been an appropriate forum. If you'd rather skulk around complaining to others, that's your choice. I'm not sure what you mean by "I state what I see when I read it." Nowhere did I state I was permanently deleting the category. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:30, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
I'm going to stay out of this since you two seem to be discussing it. I'll point out that it appears he was simply following up on the close of the discussion. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:09, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Hm, yes. But it is strange to me that the user was following up on the close with a user that wasn't responsible for the close. Whatever—different editors, different approaches. KKR Cat

Hi - I just wanted to lay out my thinking on the cat for KKR and some similar cats that have been created for PE firms. Using KKR as an example the category should include: (1) KKR, the firm and main article, (2) KKR Portfolio companies- i.e., companies that KKR owns / controls and (3) KKR people. The way I think about it KKR as a category is a subcategory of Category:Private equity firms and Category:Private equity portfolio companies. Let me know if you disagree with that logic. I think adding KKR, the firm to the PE portfolio companies cat is not correct and I don't see any reason to take KKR, the category out of either Category:Private equity firms or Category:Private equity portfolio companies. |► ϋrбanяeneωaℓTALK ◄| 13:23, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

I read WP:CAT a few times and I kind of get your point but I am also still struggling with the fact that you would prefer to have Category:Kohlberg Kravis Roberts for example only be a subcategory of Category:Categories named after companies. I understand that in effect the KKR category really crosses multiple categories. Do I need to have a category: Category:Categories named after private equity firms which would then be a subcategory of Category:Private equity firms? And then what about the portfolio companies - does it not make sense for someone going through the category on portfolio companies to be able to click to a subcategory that is focused on one private equity firm's holdings? Any suggestions would be helpful - you can respond here I will watch this page. |► ϋrбanяeneωaℓTALK ◄| 19:07, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
OK - so I think you are saying I would need to do the following:
  • Category:Kohlberg Kravis Roberts
    • subcategory of Category:Private equity firms and Category:Cateagories named after companies
    • Includes the KKR article and other articles potentially related to the firm and includes following subcategories:
      • Category:Kohlberg Kravis Roberts companies (all of the companies KKR owns)
        • Also a subcategory of Category:Private equity portfolio companies
      • Category:Kohlberg Kravis Roberts people
        • Also a subcategory of Category:Private equity and venture capital investors

I can live with that and work on that but it just seems like an unnecessary overcategorization. Is your point that a specific subcategory must be 100% comprised of items that would be also included in the parent category? Also, I don't think you understand - Category:Private equity portfolio companies should not include private equity firms only the companies they own - the KKR category was a subcategory of private equity portfolio companies because most of its constiuents would actually be constituents of Category:Private equity portfolio companies. Let me know if you have another suggestion before I start with that |► ϋrбanяeneωaℓTALK ◄| 13:10, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

  • Take a look now and let me know if you think this works. Every firm that had a category now has a subcategory that holds the portfolio companies. The PE firm cat is no longer a sub cat of PE Portfolio Companies but the sub cat is also a sub cat of the PE Portfolio Companies cat. I think this gets the job done. The only issue is that for a firm like Providence Equity Partners, for the time being the main cat is relatively empty although it may fill up over time and it still houses the sub cat with the companies. Most of the other firms have a number of articles in the main firm cat. Thanks for being so constructive on this. |► ϋrбanяeneωaℓTALK ◄| 19:31, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Requested Deleted Article

Hi - I am working on cleaning up the list of investment banks and have been trying to sort through notable and non-notable firms, removing redlinks to firms that will never be created, etc. I have also been ccreating some articles on notable current and historical firms. One firm that to me appeared to be notable but had been deleted a couple of years back was Needham & Company and I wanted to see if you wouldn't mind restoring the article into my user space at User:Urbanrenewal/Needham to work on. I am asking you since you were part of the original AfD discussion.

My guess from the AfD is that what is there is probably not well referenced and might have had major NPOV issues but I would prefer to see if there is any good content before starting a new article over from scratch. Notability looks like it can be established and I have found a number of solid refs to add. I tried contacting the closing Admin (User:Bubba hotep) but he appears to have recently retired so I thought you might be a good person to go to given our recent work together. Vegas, please refer to WP:LISTNAME for naming style guidelines for list. The airline destinations lists are lists, and should be named as such. But as it is now, most of them are potential candidates for merging or AfD, due to them being unreferenced for, in some cases, 3 years. That is unacceptable in this project. Particularly as some I have seen are unreferenced for years, yet they say "as of July 2009" blah blah blah. Anyway, I've posted to airlines talk page. --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 23:37, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Talk:Nicolaus Copernicus

Thanks for restoring Talk:Nicolaus Copernicus, and also for setting up auto-archiving, which was above and beyond the call of duty. If you don't mind answering a couple of questions:

  1. Do you know how we can configure the bot to update the archive index as the bot archives discussions? Another editor mentioned using the "auto=yes" parameter, but he can't figure out how to make it work;[4] I'm not sufficiently technical to know how to do it. Would we have to change the structure of the archive index to make it work properly?
  2. (I'm riposting this from Wikipedia:Requested moves): Some of the archives (the "Nationality" archives) are actually archives of the talk page of a separate article that was deleted as a content fork. Was other archiving "irregular" as well? —Finell (Talk) 11:32, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
I have not set the bot up to maintain the archive index. The bot setup instructions are here. One thing I do in some cases is to let the bot archive everything for one year in a single archive. That makes updating any archive index easier. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:00, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Singular or plural ?

Dear Vegaswikian,

since you are a contributor the article Intelligent cities, i would like to ask you this question personally.

Isn't the singular a standard in Wikipedia ?

I mean, of course: shouldn't the article be named Intelligent city, instead of Intelligent cities ?

Re Category:Theatres in the United States rename which you closed as undecided and removed the rename template from it. Somewhere along the way all these subcats were tagged but never were listed in nomination itself. Thanks Hmains (talk) 03:11, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Golden Gaming requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 00:58, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Wallingford dab page

Hi. I think the dab page should be moved to the base name to complete the process. Thanks. --Polaron | Talk 02:15, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

I see that the dab page has been moved, but it's talk has not.
However -
As an interim temp fix, to link the talks to their proper articles, I have amended Talk:Wallingford to be a redirect to Talk:Wallingford (disambiguation). --Redrose64 (talk) 13:33, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Move

Nothing wrong with the move you made on The Hobbit film but you dont have to delete articles to move a page theres a move button at the top and you just click it and it take you to a page wich changes its title and moves everything to the new title page its easier and faster than making a new one again nothing wrong with what you did this is just easier The Movie Master 1 (talk) 03:26, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

RE: your closing rewords [5].

My "do not delete" !vote was not an attempt at citing any policy. I think it should be read as someones !vote that did not receive support, and was well-enough answered. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 03:54, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Cat discussion closure

Consensus, I'm sure you will agree, is established by strength of argument, not by number of people exprerssing an opinion. Given this, and the fact that closure as no consensus is, in effect, a closure in favour of those seeking no change, I was surprised by your decision in this discussion, especially as the main argument proposed against the proposal were an appeal to a "convention" that was deprecated as the grounds for a speedy change, and therefore not a convention that is either widely kept or agreed in the discussion at WT:CfD. I'd be interested in your observations. Kevin McE (talk) 18:04, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Museum cats

Hey - IIRC, we talked a bit when I was walking through the Nevada museums. WP:Museums put a bit of time into coming to a working consensus on the way forward for museum cats in early summer. Several of us have been going through all of the states cleaning this up. So how do we keep track of the CFD's you've been commenting on without looking at *all* the CFD's? There's just too many of them for someone who's not actually interested in categories per se. I'm happy to comment on the ones I become aware of, but to some degree, if it's museum cats, we should involve the WP:Museum team as well. Any ideas? dm (talk) 03:59, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

While your close for Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2009 November 12#Category:Suicide sites does, refreshingly, offer a rationalization for your choice of deletion, you appear to have misinterpreted and misrepresented both my argument for retention as well as fundamental Wikipedia policy. WP:CAT states that "[i]t should be clear from the verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories". All of the articles included in the deleted category include sections describing the location as a suicide site and provide multiple reliable and verifiable sources showing that these are locations where as many as hundreds of suicides have occurred. The category allows for navigation across articles that share a rather clear and defining common characteristic. Your argument that "The keep arguments seem to say that we need reliable sources for inclusion. Well, we can't do that with categories. You can do that in a list..." is an argument that says that the entire category system should be uprooted and deleted, without any specific relevance as to why this particular category fails a criteria that no category passes. Whether it's Category:Belgian opera singers or Category:Bishops of Mashonaland or the Category:Suicide sites you arbitrarily chose to delete, Wikipedia policy requires that every entry in every category must be supported in the accompanying article with "verifiable information in the article" as to why it was placed in that category. In the arsenal of an admin CfD admin, a closing argument that applies to every single category in Wikipedia only invites perpetuation of past abusive and arbitrary closes. I ask you to reconsider your close as no consensus and to offer explanations as to why WP:V and WP:RS should be ignored at CfD and how any category can survive the arbitrary insistence that it should be deleted with a "listify close to the existing list". Playa move

Where was the renaming/move of Playa discussed? Vsmith (talk) 22:03, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

Just letting you know that this wasn't actually vandalism - SPLA&SL was the original name of the railroad. It's probably better to put the later name in bold, but it's not like the IP was making up the name. --NE2 00:46, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Category dropped

Hi. I don't understand this edit you made [6] and a similar one - is this something to do with the renaming? The categorisation seems to fit with the pattern in Category:Multiple units by countryShortfatlad (talk) 01:19, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Oh I see - but currently Turkish state railways is a monopoly - thus the distinction is slight. I see your point though - I'll create Category:Multiple units of Turkey then, so that searchers looking inside Category:Multiple units by country don't miss out.
Carry on, good precision. Maybe one day there will be another turkish railway company :)

TRAXX - loco templates

Hello I think(hope) you may be more expert on this topic than me.

I would like to re-add the navigation templates ie:

{{German diesel locomotives}} {{German electric locomotives}} {{SNCF locos}}

to the TRAXX article.

I understand that in the past there has been a problem with people using templates to automatically add categories to articles - which can cause issues. However I have in the past removed the "cats" from these templates and individually categorised the relevent articles...

I think it will be ok to re-add but I don't fully understand part of the Template:German diesel locomotives

ie this bit:

{{cat handler | main = [[Category:Diesel locomotives of Germany]] <!--Categorize in main (article) space--> | nocat = {{{nocat|}}} <!--So "nocat=true" works--> }}

Anyway is this edit ok? [7]

My personal view is that nav templates should not be used for categorisation, but it looks like the "nocat=true" can help fix any problems (only just found out about that).

No reply message means no problems. Thanks. :)

Shortfatlad (talk) 02:00, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes, situation normal

I'm fairly certain I manually did all DB locos, but just for DB/DR/DBAG cat classification, and not "Diesel locomotives of Germany" - so it shouldn't be removed (yet). It looks like TRAXX is categorising properly now, so I think everything is ok.Shortfatlad (talk) 02:59, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Move discussion close

Quick apology for [8] I waited a couple of minutes and saw you hadn't closed it yet. My mistake. You might want to remove the note ("I closed this discussion and not the person who actually tagged it as closed the first time") because the discussion was closed twice before I closed it just now, so it may be confusing. One user closed it prematurely [9] when I saw this I changed it to the current consensus, without thinking about it being too early [10] ~ ς ح д r خ є ~ 03:21, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Requested moves

Hello Vegaswikian. I just noticed your move of Sales and operations plan to Sales and Operations Planning from an RM. You followed the requested move direction without noting the capitalization issue, that I had moved it from a capitalized name to uncapitalized as it's not a proper noun. You also didnlt fix any of the double redirects. I then noticed that in your moves of U.S. Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology you also didn't fix the four double redirects created by the move; same for the move of North Korean won. In your move of KÀ to , you didn't fix any of the fair use rationales in the images linked through the page. I've just now fixed the multiple double redirects created by the moves of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the FURs for their images, and note that you did not fix the category sort key for either. I don't know how far back these go but please don't close requested moves if you do not know the procedures for cleaning up after the moves. Specifically, all double redirects need to be fixed, all images containing fair use rationales need to be pointed at the new title and the category sorts should be fixed.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:53, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Vegaswikian. I saw your recent edits with the edit summary that you were "dabbing Las Vegas", but some of the changed links were not to the Las Vegas disambiguation page, but to the unambiguous redirect Las Vegas, NV. I undid one of them on my watchlist, then saw the others I thought I might be missing something. What's up? -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:07, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the response. This change still doesn't appear to be correct -- it seems to be listing cities, not metro areas. -- JHunterJ (talk) 20:47, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

West Australian and Tasmanian railway systems

I have probably not expressed myself very well at the Cfd changes of the two proposals - please accept my apologies in advance if I have offended you or havent made a clear explanation why the suggestion in my opinion is absurd. I would be only too pleased to explain in detail if you would like. I do hope you are able to take all this without much offence - cheers SatuSuro 15:16, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

I feel partially to blame of the mess of the railway article and category system in Western Australia and Tasmania - as I had a little something to do with some of them - what a mess - oh well another 'to do' - more clean up needed there than in a steam era workshop (which was the ultimate mess in 20th century industrial heritage terms) SatuSuro 23:28, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Apologies for sloppy and rambling style on my part - suggested resolution - allow both category names to exist - and I will make an attempt at providing very careful text to ascertain the criteria for what goes in what category SatuSuro 01:59, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks - my new year resolution in this matter (and cat tagging) - brief and to the point - what a promise :( SatuSuro 02:12, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Also I do understand your point at Mull (and the contrary one) - in some cases to know which bloody project is technically related to which is a damned nightmare - and well worth steering clear of - you could technically have a full time clerical assistant muddling through that for your work :( SatuSuro 02:21, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Category:Passenger trains in Alaska

Hi

You seem to have a very good grasp on categorising of railway stuff, so may I ask you to look at Category:Passenger trains in Alaska and see if you can find parent categs for it, or CFD it if needed?

Thanks! --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:32, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

  • I found two good categories for it. I will point out an issue with placing it in Category:Named passenger trains of the United States. This contains both named trains and categories by railway. This is the only state grouping of named trains. So there is still the question of starting a breakout by state. Alaska may be unique here since it is isolated from the rest of the country. Hawaii, the other exception, may not have notable named trains, I just don't know. For the rest of the US, these named trains generally crossed multiple states like the Overland Limited. Whatever happens, I don't think we want to start including those multi state trains in by state categories. I think I'm going to suggest a name to include Alaska Railroad which operates all of the ones in that category. P.S. I know nothing about trains. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:50, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Conflict in Atlantic City article need your opinion on this..

A user by the name of Prosenberg80 is inserting information about a local taxi company into the Atlantic City article. In my humble opinion this falls as self promotion per Wikipedia:Conflict of interest since it appears that they are the owners of the company and it really does not have any real relevance to the article itself. I'd appreciate if you would give an opinion as to how this should be handled. Dancing is Forbidden (talk) 16:30, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

You are correct, I am the owner of the company. However, after nearly 90 years in business I think it's a little insulting that you feel we "don't have any real relevance" to the history of Atlantic City. On the contrary, I believe I can be a very useful resource on the subject. I understand completely your concerns regarding self-promotion. Please note I have made no reference to any phone numbers, advertising nor have I prompted any reader to do anything more than understand our position in the community... something I am very proud of. We are historically relevant and internationally accredited. I would also point out the Atlantic City Jitney Association is licensed exactly the same way my taxis are; if you are going to dismiss me I think you should dismiss them. I look forward to hearing from you so that we may improve Atlantic City's Wikipedia entry. Prosenberg80 (talk) 04:01, 27 December 2009 (UTC) PRosenberg80
Since the discussion seems to be here, I'll comment here. I have not yet looked at the article so these are general comments. WP:COI should be considered if you are going to add comments about your own company. A company that has existed for 90 years has a chance that it is notable. Time alone does not say a company meets WP:N. Just because a company owner inserts material about a company does not mean it should be removed. However I personally am inclined to remove information like this unless is meets WP:RS and WP:V. Also adding this to a city article could be problematic unless it really is important to the development of the city or it flows logically within the article. Clearly material like this can be a problem until consensus to keep or consensus for specific wording becomes established. Finally, even if the text is in the city article, WP:CORP may provide guidance about keeping any mention of the company. Mentioning only one company may be viewed as bias in the text so we should clearly tread carefully if we do that. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:13, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

Location

For starters your OPINION on what goes in the location field and what does not is up for debate. I have not read anything in the manual of style on the proper description of a location, so if you have please point it out. Secondly, not all infoboxes have an address field, as such an address in the location field is just as descriptive as just a city name. I never sourced the USPS as an address source so stop saying I have. Personally I rely on the address provided by the website of the building in question if it is not a PO Box somewhere else, give it a try. Thank you for your criticism and hopefully we can work together and not against each other on projects in the future. Cygnusloop99 (talk) 17:37, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

CV Disambig

I'm curious as to why you have "Talk:CV (disambiguity)" redirect to "Talk:Curriculum vitae". This seems odd since not all discussions relating to CV have to do with Curriculum Vitae. Is there a convincing argument to redirect a disambiguity talk page to the talk of just one specific meaning?
As a side note, I did not even know "curriculum vitae" was a possible meaning of CV until a few months ago, and I'm just about middle aged (curriculum vitae is not as common of a term in the US), and I already knew of many other meanings for CV. — al-Shimoni (talk) 05:45, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
